St. Petersburg and the Polar Circle 9 days in the summer

During this tour, you will discover St. Petersburg, the city of Russian tsars. A city full of canals, palatial architecture and the worldwide famous museum residences of emperors in baroque style.
Then you will get to travel to the Russian North by night train where you will see Murmansk, the capital of the Arctic Circle. Here you will experience its environment and see a Lappish village ‘Teriberka’, the village in the corner of the world.

Day 1
Arrival in St. Petersburg

Transfer. Accommodation: homestay with a local, in a hotel or in an apartment.

Day 2
Introduction to St. Petersburg

The fascinating tour around the city. You will see:

  • The Nevsky Prospect
  • The Church of the Savior on Blood
  • Kazan Cathedral
  • The Winter Palace - the Hermitage
  • Smolny Cathedral
  • The Admiralty
  • The University

Visit of the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Peter and Paul Cathedral.

Day 3
The Hermitage and the Neva River boat tour

Our guide will introduce you to the Hermitage, one of the largest museums in the world. You will see major masterpieces strolling around the warren of the Winter Palace passages.

Evening boat tour, you will sail the Neva River and canals (St. Petersburg is known as the so-called Northern Venice).

Day 4
Tour to Peterhof

Tour to Peterhof, the former imperial residence, located on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland (one of Seven Wonders of Russia). You will see the gorgeous palace, the large and charming park, the lower and upper gardens and over 100 impressive fountains.

Day 5
From St. Petersburg to Murmansk by train

A transfer to the railway station.

Day 6
Murmansk: a first glance at the city

Arrival in Murmansk. You will be met by our representative and transferred to the city centre.

Guided city tour which includes visiting:

  • Five Corners Square
  • The monument to The Defenders of the Soviet Arctic during World War II (known as "Alyosha»), the memorial dedicated to the soldiers and sailors who perished in peacetime.

On request:

  • The excursion around the nuclear icebreaker "Lenin" in Murmansk is conducted in Russian, your guide will provide interpreting.
Day 7
Pursuit of the polar lights

Visiting the ‘Sámi Seit’ museum dedicated to the Sámi (also called Saam) people, inhabiting the Kola Peninsula and lost somewhere in tundra amidst the fur forests.

  • You will see the traditional reindeer skin tents, called Chums, as well as the alley of Sámi people idols, where you will have a chance to make a wish.
  • Visiting a farm to admire such farmed animals as reindeer, huskies, Arctic foxes and rabbits.
  • Take a quad bike tour, play traditional Sámi games, take photos in Sámi folk costumes.
  • Tasting Sámi salmon soup, called Lima, bread baked in the village of Lovozero and drinking Pakula, which is a lichen tea.
Day 8
Teriberka, a village on the edge of the world

The whole day is devoted to visiting the abandoned village of Teriberka, located on the Barents shore, 150 km to the North of Murmansk. The village became famous owing to Andrey Zvyagintsev's film ‘Leviathan’.

  • You will be attracted by the fascinating landscapes, Arctic tundra, and the shore with huge boulders known as ‘dragon eggs’.
  • After walking 3 km along the shore, you will see a magnificent waterfall flowing into the Barents Sea.
  • You will visit the so called ancient ship cemetery and see numerous old ship wrecks and then go to ‘Old Teriberka’, the village inhabited by the pomors (a small-numbered folk living there all through the ages) and known for its haunted houses.
  • Picnic with tea and sandwiches (on the spot) Return to Murmansk.
Day 9

Transfer to the airport/railway station.

  • You have 3 options of living in St. Petersburg: in an apartment, in a 3* hotel or with locals. The last option is only available for 4 people. You will stay in the 4*Azimut hotel (or similar) in Murmansk. Living in a guesthouse in Murmansk is also possible upon the request.
  • To feel comfortable beyond the Arctic Circle, you should have your thermal underwear, winter jacket, hat, scarf and gloves during the trip.
  • Remember to take your camera, tripod and spare batteries to make photos of the polar lights.
  • The excursion around the nuclear icebreaker "Lenin" in Murmansk is conducted in Russian, your guide will provide interpreting.
  • For visiting the villages of Sámi and Teriberka take your waterproof winter boots.
  • Tasting Lima soup does not make a filling meal. You can bring your own food to have a snack on the spot or reserve lunch in the Sámi village in advance (for an additional fee)
  • The distance between Murmansk and Teriberka village is about 150 km. 100 km are on a highway and about 50 km are on an unpaved road.
