Our 14-day cruise along the Volga and Don aboard the Nizhny Novgorod 4* will introduce you to the real Russia.

Magnificent landscapes, endless open spaces and stops in famous Russian cities await you: Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Saratov, Volgograd, Kazan (part of the Mongol Empire) and Astrakhan (the capital of the Golden Horde).

Day 1
Arrival in Moscow

Day 2

Discover the Russian capital during a city bus tour. You will see the most important monuments of this bustling metropolis:

  • Tverskaya Street, one of the main shopping streets in Moscow
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • KGB building (exterior visit only)
  • Red Square, a symbol of Moscow, (free time), and GUM department stores
  • Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (exterior visit only)

Excursion of the Kremlin, a fortified city in the centre of the capital and a symbol of power and authority (tour of the Kremlin and one of its cathedrals).

Return on board, night on board.

Day 3

Another day of sightseeing in Moscow; visit to the Tretyakov Gallery. This Russian art museum is home to about 130,000 masterpieces of Russian art and graphics dating back to different centuries.

Free day with possibility of additional excursions in Moscow.

Day 4

Arrival in Uglich and walking tour in the city centre:

  • Uglich Kremlin and St. Dmitry’s Church
  • Church of the Transfiguration

Return on board; the cruise continues to Yaroslavl.

Day 5
Yaroslavl – Kostroma

Arrival in Yaroslavl and sightseeing tour:

  • Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Russia, and an icon museum.
  • Church of St. Nicholas Nadein with its magnificent baroque iconostasis and the Church of the Prophet Elijah (exterior visit only).
  • Walk around the local market (free time).
  • Interactive tour of the former governor’s home. Today, it is an art gallery.

Return on board and departure to Kostroma.

Arrival in Kostroma, a port city on the Volga.

  • Sightseeing tour; visit to the Ipatiev Monastery and Trinity Cathedral, famous for its beautiful 17th century frescoes.

Return on board and departure to Nizhny Novgorod.

Day 6
Nizhny Novgorod

Arrival in Nizhny Novgorod:

  • Sightseeing tour of the historic city centre by automobile: tour of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.

Day 7

Arrival in Cheboksary, the capital of the Republic of Chuvashia:

  • City tour by private automobile.

Return on board and departure to Kazan.

Arrival in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan and the former centre of the Golden Horde, a city where Islamic and Orthodox culture intersect.

  • Sightseeing tour of the city centre: the Kazan Kremlin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Return on board and departure to Samara.

Day 9

Arrival in Samara, the cradle of Indo-European culture.

  • Sightseeing tour by automobile with a visit to the Art Gallery.

Return on board and departure to Saratov.

Arrival in Saratov, the administrative centre of Saratov Region, located on the right bank of the Volga.

Day 11

Arrival in Volgograd. Previously the city was called Tsaritsyn, and after - Stalingrad. It was here that the bloody Battle of Stalingrad unfolded.

  • Sightseeing bus tour: Mamaev Kurgan, the dominant hill where the Motherland Calls memorial complex was erected in memory of the Battle of Stalingrad.

Return on board and departure to Astrakhan.

Day 13

Excursion to Astrakhan, the ancient capital of the Khazar and Tatar empires. The city was an important commercial hub on the Silk Road, and today it is the gateway to the Volga Delta.

  • The sightseeing tour (private transport) will take you to the Astrakhan Kremlin, the second largest after the Moscow Kremlin.

  • You may refuse to join our group excursions, but then you will have some free time. You may also book additional excursions that are not included in the program.
