The Great Gatchina Palace is located 50 km from St. Petersburg, it is the former emperor’s residence and one of the most charming spots in the northern capital.

The Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great, presented Gatchina to her royal minion Grigory Orlov. The palace and park were built from 1766 to 1781 by Antonio Ronaldi. After the death of Count Orlov, the Gatchina Palace became the residence of the future emperor Paul I, a son of Catherine the Great. Behind the simple exterior you will find posh interior full of rich collections of paintings, weapons and other relics.

In 1796, Vincenzo Brenna, an Italian architect was invited to rebuild the palace. Vincenzo Brenna modified a court into a military foothold while a stable became an armory according to the military taste of the new emperor. The Great Gatchina Palace was the residence of four generations of the Romanov family until the 1917 revolution.

The palace was set on fire and was bombed several times during the Second World War. The first renovated halls were opened only in 1985. Moreover, the restoration still continues. The palace consists of more than 500 halls, only 10 of them are open nowadays. The visitors will enjoy paintings and sculptures of the 18th and 19th centuries there.

During the Gatchina tour, a guide will tell about the history of the palace and the fate of its residents. You will see reception halls, the Greek gallery, the famous marble staircase of armory square which is a great example of the Russian neo-renaissance. Besides you will go down the stairs to the underground passage (also called ‘Echo cave’), leading to the park.
