The Wooden Church (Pokrovskaya Church)
NB! Services are held on Sunday mornings. It is prohibited to take pictures inside and for women to enter with their heads uncovered.
Are you dreaming of visiting a place that is out of the ordinary but is not crowded heavily by tourists? Why not take the opportunity to go North, in Karelia, to admire Kizhi Island and its wonderful wooden churches registered in UNESCO’S World Heritage List? Alas! Set off on a journey with our guide and visit an unusual orthodox church situated outside the city. Five kilometers from the border of the city, a few meters from the spot where the Neva River arches, at the entrance to the forest with the area of 600 hectares, there’s a large 20 dome church made completely of wood!
The temple is a replicated copy of the wooden church with 22 domes named after the Protection of the Mother of God (1708), that was located in the Vytegorsky Pogost until 1963. The Church of the Intercession is impressive in its size and style and is significantly different from the classic style of most St. Petersburg monuments.
