Two days Novgorod Tour is a great possibility to see an old Russian town, founded in 8-9 centuries. Novgorod was a witness of government’s origin. You will enjoy magnificent stone cathedrals, traditional wooden buildings and churches and immerse in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
07:25 : Departure from St. Petersburg
10:17 : Arrival in Novgorod. A local guide will meet you there.
10:00-13:00 : A guided city tour including a visit to the ‘Vitoslavlitsi’, the museum of wooden architecture. You will see a unique collection of wooden buildings such as the Russian izba, churches, mills, sheds of the 16thh-19tth centuries etc. Besides, you will see Yuriev Monastery, one of the largest and oldest monasteries in Russia.
13:00-14:00 : Lunch
14:00-16:00 : A guided tour of the Novgorod Kremlin, the fortress that has been defending Novgorod for many centuries. Nowadays the fortress is the monument of different architectural styles.
You will see:
- The Cathedral of St. Sophia, the first Russian stone construction
- The bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Sophia
- The monument to the thousand years of Russia
- The State Novgorod Museum-Reservation

10:00 : You will visit the Varlaamo-Khutynsk Convent, located within 11 kilometers from the city in a picturesque place. Surrounded by nature’s beauty, the convent
ensemble is a gorgeous monument of architecture of 16th century.
You will visit the Church of the Transfiguration which was built in 1374. You will also see the frescoes painted by Theophanes the Greek.
The entry into the church may be closed due to weather conditions.
12:30 – 13:30 : The dinner
14:00 : You will visit the displays of iconography with an English-speaking guide. The exposition includes over 260 icons. You will admire the masterpieces of different centuries such as the two meters high icon of St. Peter and Paul of 11th century and Edessa by Euthymius monk of 18th century. You will visit the palace that has been storing the arts and crafts collection of 11-19th centuries. The building is interesting from the architecture aspect, built in 15th century in Gothic style, is unique for Novgorod constructions. Many historic events took place in the palace, there were many noble guests and ambassadors. You will also see a collection of silver objects of religious worship.
16:30 : You will have some spare time
21:20 : Departure to Moscow by night train (with couchettes for 4 people)
